Providing Critical Relief in the Wake of Hurricane Dorian

Desperate Humanitarian Relief Was Needed

Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas in 2019 was among the worst natural disasters the Abaco Islands have ever had to navigate. Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 hurricane, hit the islands on September 1, and a day later, hit the Grand Bahama Island, still holding on to its Category 5 strength. It stalled over the Grand Bahama for yet another day, finally pulling away from the island on September 3.

The Category 5 Hurricane That Turned Lives Upside Down

I WAS HUNGRY believes that hunger, dependency, and poverty could be eradicated if a farmer is capable of spreading the knowledge, skills, and hope they have received from this training program to their village and neighboring communities. Here are some core farming and management principles taught.

On September 1, the eye of Hurricane Dorian touched land on the Abaco Islands with winds of more than 185 mph, making it the strongest hurricane on record to affect The Bahamas and surrounding areas. This infamous storm left at least 70,000 people homeless across the country. An estimated 13,000 homes—that’s roughly 45% of the homes on the Abacos and Grand Bahama—suffered severe damage or were completely destroyed.‍

In addition, after Hurricane Dorian struck the northeast Bahamas, it is estimated that over 5,000 Haitians living in Marsh Harbor died in the enormous storm surge.

Offering Relief and Love to the People of The Bahamas

In the first 90 days after Hurricane Dorian subsided, The King’s Wings made 74 flights to The Bahamas and surrounding areas, delivering much-needed food, water, and emergency care and supplies. The volunteer pilots and staff worked diligently for hours on end to collect the necessary supplies and volunteers who could bring relief to the Bahamians in utter distress.

In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, The King’s Wings not only helped to evacuate local people, transport relief workers, and volunteers, but they provided love and empathy in the midst of one of the greatest crises in Bahamian history.‍

The King’s Wings accomplished this important work thanks to donated funds and support from others in the surrounding communities.
